ROP Classification and Basics of Exam & Treatment

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding disease caused by abnormal development of retinal blood vessels in premature infants. The retina is the inner layer of the eye that receives light and turns it into visual messages that are sent to the brain.

Understanding of the disease ROP, associated risk factors, screening criteria, classifications (zones, stages) examination and treatments are essential in helping preserve the vision of these small infants.At the end of the presentation, the clinician will be able to:

• Describe the disease entity ROP & associated risk factors
• Understand the screening guidelines
• Describe the classifications of stages and zones of ROP
• Understand presence of plus of pre-plus disease
• Understand the importance of documentation
• Understand of the various treatment options
